Transitions

On June 30, 2018, after 50 years, I shall retire from Temple University School of Medicine (now named the Lewis Katz School of Medicine, but it will always be Temple to me). Temple has been a great home to me, and they let me be me doing things my way. To commemorate my 50 years, the School commissioned a portrait of me to hang in the Medical School and also raised funds to endow an annual lecture in my name. I am both honored and touched by these uncommon gestures. I got to pick the artist for the portrait, and it was my good fortune that my dear friend Randall Exon agreed to paint it. Randall is one of the most accomplished and admired painters in the US today. He is not a portrait painter, but he can paint anything, even me. The portrait is reproduced here, and as you can see it is not a conventional portrait. It is four feet square, so I am life size in the painting.

Last November, Carol, my dear wife of 53 years, died after a brief, unexpected illness. I haven't been able to paint since, hence the long time since images were posted on this site. But, with the healing that comes with time and the extra time provided by my retirement, I know I'll be painting again soon. So watch for new work on this site before long.
